Welcome to new (new) TechCrunch. It's The Daily Crunch.

THE DAILY CRUNCH
WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 28 2018 By Darrell Etherington

New TechCrunch design! New funding for a new self-driving startup! New Fitbit smartwatches! Two of those things are exciting, one is not. It's the Daily Crunch for February 28, 2018.

1. There's a new TechCrunch (for some of you)

TechCrunch has a new redesign ready to roll. Or nearly ready to roll at least. It's a big change, and so we're setting it live for a select bucket of users first.

10 percent of you will see the new site right now, selected at random. Don't worry if you don't have it yet, we're going to roll this out gradually to everyone else, too, incorporating feedback along the way.

2. Aurora raises $90 million for self-driving platform

The self-driving startup from a key member of Google's self-driving car team is doing great, raising a big new round and adding two high-profile board members including Reid Hoffman and Mike Volpi.

3. Fitbit is planning another version of its smartwatch

Fitbit is building another smartwatch to follow up its Ionic, even though that one basically did shit. But this one looks nicer? I guess?

4. Baidu's video business is doing a big U.S. IPO

Baidu has a big streaming video business that it's spinning out with its own IPO, set for a U.S. launch.

5. Waymo has done 5 million miles driven on city streets

Waymo has racked up over 5 million miles driven autonomously on public roads, and it's got a new 360-degree immersive experience to show you just what it's like to use an AV.

6. Facebook is looking to be LinkedIn but for everyone

I guess Facebook wants to be a blue-collar job board. I still think FB is basically doing all the wrong things all the time these days.

7. Porsche is talking trash to Tesla

Can Porsche steal Tesla's performance crown for EVs with its 2019 Mission E? Who knows, but they sure do talk some serious shit.

Editor's Pick: FutureProof Retail President Di Di Chan: Combine Your Strengths

Vivian Wagner
Feb 27, 2018 12:09 PM PT
FutureProof Retail aims to redefine the in-store checkout experience. "From the consumer point of view, when you go shopping you have people who help you and service you, and you walk away happy," said President Di Di Chan. "What we're doing is bringing the online offline, to centralize that service. It's not just the top VIP shopper who can enjoy that experience -- everyone can." [More...]

Real Danger and Dangerous Distraction - AI to the Rescue?
The shooting at the school in Florida was devastating, and it appears clear that Russia has been manipulating public opinion in the U.S. to stoke the flames of a divisive argument on guns. What is being missed is a brewing problem that potentially could have an even more devastating impact. Competing for our eyeballs is the news that the U.S. president kissed a woman without her permission. [More...]
Camera, Audio Star in New Galaxy Phones
Samsung has raised the curtain on the latest models of its flagship Galaxy smartphones, the S9 and S9+, featuring improved imaging and audio performance. Two standout features in the 12-megapixel rear-facing camera are improved low light performance and super slow-mo video. By adding dual aperture capabilities to the camera, Samsung has boosted the unit's performance in challenging lighting conditions. [More...]
SC Justices to Hear Arguments in Microsoft, DoJ Data Privacy Face-Off
The U.S. Supreme Court on Tuesday will hear oral arguments in a landmark case over whether federal law enforcement can force Microsoft to hand over email stored in an overseas data center as evidence in a drug-trafficking case. The case, United States of America v. Microsoft Corporation, which dates back to 2013, is viewed as a potentially groundbreaking showdown over data privacy. [More...]
5 Effective Ways SMB Etailers Can Battle Fraud
Fraud is a major concern for 72 percent of businesses, according to Experian's Global Fraud and Identity Report. More than 5,500 consumers and 500 business executives in 11 markets around the world participated in the survey. The situation has not been improving, the report suggests, as six out of 10 businesses said experienced the same or increased losses to fraud as they did a year ago. [More...]

A big step for self-driving cars. It's The Daily Crunch.

THE DAILY CRUNCH
TUESDAY, FEBRUARY 27 2018 By Anthony Ha

California takes another step towards our self-driving future, Rakuten embraces crypto and we round up the big announcements from Mobile World Congress. All that and more in The Daily Crunch for February 27, 2018.

1. California to allow testing of self-driving cars without a driver present

Until now, California's DMV only allowed companies to test autonomous vehicles if there was a trained safety driver behind the wheel. Now they've also added rules for fully driverless tests — another step towards commercial deployment.

The new rules go into effect on April 2.

2. Rakuten will roll its $9B loyalty program into a new blockchain-based cryptocurrency, Rakuten Coin

The Japanese e-commerce company is planning a new cryptocurrency called Rakuten Coin — built on blockchain technology and the company's existing loyalty program, Rakuten Super Points. The goal is to encourage loyalty services globally and to help customers to buy goods across different Rakuten services and markets.

3. Rating the big smartphone makers at MWC 2018

Mobile World Congress is still underway in Barcelona, but all of the big names have already wrapped up their press conferences. Brian Heater breaks down the winners and losers.

4. Google's Flutter app SDK for iOS and Android is now in beta

Flutter is Google's open source toolkit for helping developers build iOS and Android apps. It's not necessarily a household name yet, but it's also less than a year old. (Also, do open source toolkits generally become household names? I'm just asking.)

5. Industrious picks up $80M to outclass WeWork for the enterprise

Industrious pitches itself as a more premium version of WeWork, offering coworking space and workplace services to some 35 locations across 25 cities nationwide.

6. Cellebrite may have found a way to unlock iPhones running iOS 11

This is a cat-and-mouse game, and Apple engineers are presumably working hard to fix all the vulnerabilities they can find. As always, if you don't want to let authorities read your personal data, you should keep your devices up-to-date.

7. 'Wolverine: The Long Night' director talks podcasts and superheroes

"What does an audio fight scene look like?"
